ASPECT Studios was awarded first prize for our lighting design entry in to the LightCycle competition.
LightCycle is a competition where 50 parties including leading design practices were invited to design a sustainable lighting fixture using a lighting kit provided by the organisers.
ASPECT Studios’ entry titled: “A Light Sketch” used tracing paper as its primary medium, which was accumulated within our design studio over four weeks, showcasing a heavily consumed but rarely seen product integral to the collective studio process.
Circles of trace were layered over a simple spherical form to create a structural skin, allowing the marks and lines of the drawings to remain the focus. The outer layer of undulating tubes of trace creates a dynamic and organic form that shapes and funnels the light in fascinating ways.
The medium of trace invites closer inspection by the viewer, with the dissection and deformity of the drawings creating moments of intrigue and ambiguity. Overall the pendant captures the frailty of the media with a lack of preciousness in the assembly.
