The relocatable POP-UP-PARK has opened, transforming an under utilised site on Foster Street adjacent to Dandenong Station in Victoria.
This project is part of the Revitalising Central Dandenong initiative, a $290 million project to restore Dandenong as the capital of Melbourne's south east over the next 15-20 years.Within five years the POP-UP-PARK will either be incorporated into the final design of the site or relocated to an alternative area in Dandenong. Wherever possible the facility's construction method and materials were selected to ensure it can be relocated in the future.
ASPECT Studios took a lead role for its client VicUrban, in providing design and construction documentation, and a ‘hands on’ contract administration role in delivering the park, sourcing and negotiating donated materials from local suppliers. Senior staff members even contributed to planting ,and furniture installation, and sweeping the pavement!
In its infancy the project was successful in securing a $608,000 grant from the Australian Government Jobs Fund and a $480,000 Victorian Community Support Grant from the Department of Planning and Community Development, which ASPECT Studios was involved in preparing. This funding has allowed Vicurban, through a partnership with Mission Australia, to offer the opportunity for 24 local trainees to complete certificate 3 in horticulture and construction, many of whom have since moved on to full time employment.
The POP-UP-PARK will provide a meeting place and offer a range of recreational, structured and fun opportunities for people in Dandenong. In addition to the soccer pitches there will be BBQ facilities and a central community garden for all to enjoy.
