Minister Launches Protecting the Yarra River (Birrarung) Discussion Paper

The Minister for Planning, Richard Wynne and the Minister for Water, Lisa Neville, have launched the Protecting the Yarra River (Birrarung) Discussion Paper.

The purpose of the paper is to generate discussion about how the Yarra River is managed and protected by identifying key issues and options for improved governance of the River and its surrounds.   The paper has been prepared by the Yarra River Protection Ministerial Advisory Committee, which is chaired by Chris Chesterfield along with other members including ASPECT Studios’ Director Kirsten Bauer.   The Committee will provide independent advice to government by the end of 2016 on governance reforms regarding three key aspects of the Yarra River:
  • Waterway health (stream, riverbanks and vegetation)
  • Community use, access and amenity of the river and its network of parklands and open spaces
  • The interface of the river with adjacent land uses and its catchment
