Onkaparinga River Recreation Park and National Park
ASPECT Studios_Onkaparinga River Recreation Park and National Park01   Adelaide is fortunate to have stunning natural environments right on its doorstep and we recently had the exciting opportunity to develop concepts to strengthen the enduring legacy of one of South Australia’s most stunning, yet relatively undiscovered, natural assets.   Environmental tourism is a growing focus of the South Australian Government and we were engaged by the Department of Environment, Water & Natural Resources to create a concept master plan for the sensitive development of the Onkaparinga River Recreation Park and National Park, which are located less than 35 minutes from Adelaide’s CBD. We collaborated with Urban & Public and C4 Architects to produce a number of concept proposals for a wide range of sites, including new Visitor Facilities and an improved Trail Network.   The Onkaparinga River Recreational Park is a 284-hectare site while the National Park stretches some 1544 hectares. Both sites represent significant recreational and tourism assets and provide enhanced biodiversity and commercial opportunities for the State.   The Recreation Park features estuaries and wetlands, which are ideal for fishing, kayaking, canoeing and outdoor education among a broad wildlife population. Set within existing and developing suburban areas, the Recreation Park is close to popular coastal destinations and is well connected to public transport infrastructure.   Visitors to the National Park can enjoy an entirely different experience. Set among farming and rural properties, the park forms part of the acclaimed McLaren Vale winery district with it’s primary attraction being the dramatic Onkaparinga River Gorge. There are rock climbing areas and a network of trails for visitors to explore by foot or bike.   Proposed upgrades to these two sites will not only cater to existing visitors but will also attract a whole new category of tourists through the development of exciting new experiences, such as bush camping and new trails to lookouts that allow visitors to take in the majestic views along the gorge. The surrounding landscapes provide an opportunity to develop diversified nature-based tourism that integrates with adjacent local environments and communities.   Our landscape concept package for these stunning natural sites carefully considers both people and place. It promotes active, healthy lifestyles while nurturing and protecting this stunning natural environment.
