Special Commendation for “Living Retail” at the Brickworks Living Building Challenge

ASPECT Studios recently teamed up with NH Architecture, Ark Resources, E2Designlab, and Mott MacDonald to submit an entry for the Brickworks Living Building Challenge Design Competition. Our scheme titled “Living Retail “won a Special Commendation.

The judges were impressed with the creative use of passive house principles, integrated water cycle management and the extensive green roofs and urban agriculture that were incorporated into the design. The competition brief was to design a retail precinct that achieve the Living Building Challenge Net Zero target for all of the project’s energy, water and waste to maned on site.   The Living Futures Institute of Australia’s statement from the judging panel: “A visually impressive 'long life loose fit' design which utilises natural ventilation and the venturi effect, and includes high density residential. Interesting features include a mobile batching plant on site for construction waste, and a user (tenant) pays for power system to incentivise battery storage.”   Our scheme included the briefed supermarket, retail, and childcare facilities, as well as a residential development. The learnings from this project have yielded some very interesting possibilities for the way our urban developments are design for sustainability and climate resilience.   For more information: The Living Futures Institute   Architecture and Design Return to News
