ASPECT Studios’ Perth team recently took the opportunity to combine the ambitions behind these initiatives to create a series of three speculative landscape interventions that would redefine the city and provide a framework for the next 200 years of its evolution.

City wide approach

Collectively this rewilding of the city’s northern and southern edges creates a green frame to the city that will provide numerous benefits including improved ecological systems, climate regulation, flood control, recreational opportunities, and economic benefits.

Green streets
Revitalising the city centre and connecting to the newly established green edges requires the creation of a more walkable and connected city centre. Supported by recent improvements to, and extension of, the city’s public transport network, the second intervention extends the existing eastwest pedestrian malls and creates new pedestrianised northsouth treets through the city core, to encourage walkability and activation.
Introducing green walkable streets into a city center will bring numerous benefits, including improved connectivity, reduced car traffic, improved air quality, enhanced canopy cover, the stimulation of economic activity and increased property values. The result will be a more sustainable, healthy, and economically vibrant city centre.

The result will be a more sustainable, healthy, and economically vibrant city centre.
The final initiative is to improve the city’s connectivity to the north and west. Currently the city is cut off from its northern and western neighbours by freeway and rail corridors. While these serve important transport purposes, they also prevent surrounding communities from accessing the city. Decking and creating development opportunities over these corridors will help to access a larger catchment of residents and businesses, improve access to the city and activate the underutilised city edges, ultimately improving vibrancy and activity within the city. Collectively these three initiatives seek to reimagine Perth as a place that reflects and celebrates its unique character, is highly sustainable and future focused and is a fantastic place to live, work and visit whilst providing a highly sustainable platform to support the next phase of the city’s evolution.
