Bunurong Memorial Park
ASPECT Studios and BVN Architects reworked an 11-hectare space to reflect the client’s vision of a contemporary memorial park that celebrates the Australian landscape. The result is a contemplative and welcoming space to honour and remember those who have passed away.
The central precinct works as a community hub for the greater park, with a play space, water feature, Australian display gardens, a café and celebration spaces.
ASPECT introduced bold landforms, realigning road networks and reorienting the landscape setting around an existing water body, to forge a localised and memorable Australian landscape experience. An air of calm and a focus on natural elements communicates the function of the park in a way that is appropriate for a diversity of cultural and religious traditions.

The new landscape form has a striking arrangement of outdoor memorial “rooms” formed by trees, gardens and landforms, allowing for flexibility to address the client’s need for adaptability to changing memorial and burial trends and practices.
By increasing product yield, improving protection from wind and surrounding land uses, and instigating a site-wide integrated water strategy, ASPECT has ensured the long-term sustainability of a key place for celebrating life, and death, in Melbourne’s growing southeast.
