Felixstow Reserve

Felixstow Reserve is located on the River Torrens/Karrawirra Pari and showcases some of the rich cultural history of the Kaurna people - the traditional owners of the Adelaide Plains on which the project site is located.
ASPECT Studios led a team to undertake the detail design, documentation and construction phase services of the reserve. Exploration into the site’s natural context, relationship with the River Torrens, Kaurna history and artefacts, and Post-European heritage, led to the development of key themes and a consistent design narrative.
  • TRADITIONAL OWNERS AND ONGOING CUSTODIANS OF THE LAND Kaurna
  • CLIENT City of Norwood Payneham & St Peters
  • LOCATION Felixstow, South Australia, Australia
  • YEAR 2017- 2019
An existing scar tree was retained and now acts as a major interpretive element that links other cultural markers throughout the site. Nature play in the lower park includes small play structures inspired by wathuwardi (branch huts), referencing camps the Kaurna people created on the embankments of the River Torrens/Karrawirra Pari. A structured pavilion and recreation space echoes the orchards and vineyards that once stood on the site, and also acts as a central amenities hub, containing toilets, picnic tables, basketball and netball courts and barbeque facilities.
In Felixstow Reserve, ASPECT Studios and its collaborators have created a space for all to enjoy, while at the same providing an important opportunity for connection and reconciliation.
