Pelzer Park / Pityarilla (Park 19) Activity Hub
Community engagement is at the heart of the success of Pelzer Park – Pityarilla in the Kaurna language – in Adelaide’s South Parklands. Crafted to involve and inspire, the extensive community engagement program ensured the built outcomes reflected community values, needs and aspirations, with Kaurna representatives assisting to develop the “weaving” of the site’s diverse cultural elements. The early involvement of The City of Adelaide maintenance team contributed to the durability and longevity of the play materials.
Beautiful rockwork, softly-carved log elements, a sculpted witchetty grub and immense eye-catching structures add depth to a nature play area that makes the most of the site’s natural features. Play elements are accessible to children of all abilities and are designed for multiple users at one time. Smaller children create interactive cubbies – wiltjas – by placing branches against purpose-built frames. An interactive stream can only run its full distance with the intervention and collaboration of visiting children.

The free-roaming wild play area includes the restored South Parklands Creek and oxbow flood-zone, allowing for experiential learning and semi-supervised play throughout a forest of plants. These features create a kit of exciting but unexplained playthings, inviting kids to create their own games.
A promenade, an event space, tennis and basketball courts, an irrigated lawn ideal for picnics and dog parks, combine with the all-ages plays paces to encourage multi-generational interaction, social inclusion and new friendships between children and their families. Extensive play auditing ensured all play elements were safe, fit for purpose and met the client’s and ASPECT Studio’s aspirations.
