The Bunurong Memorial Park challenges the way that communities engage with death. Bunurong is not just a place for the memorialising our loved ones but also a place for the living with the site hosting a café, playground, picnic areas as well as walking, running and cycling trails.

Aspect Studios Global Design Director Kirsten Bauer spoke with The Age and says ‘there has been a shift in cities’ relationship to death…with good design helping people come to terms with death.’

“The thing they’re trying to do is to be more multi-functional, so there’s more value for the community in consideration of the space [a cemetery] takes up,” she said. “We need to be smarter about that.”

The Bunurong Memorial Park and Cemetery is a part of Melbourne Design Week, 23 May – 2 June 2024.
