A new mass public transportation system

ASPECT Studios undertook the public domain design for the 12km CBD and South East Light Rail (CSELR) as part of the ALTRAC Light Rail Consortium delivering the project for Transport for New South Wales. Our scope included urban design, design development, documentation and construction design services.

The CSELR provides a high frequency, high capacity, efficient public transport connection from Circular Quay to Randwick and Kingsford via Central Station and Moore Park, incorporating 19 accessible light rail stops and transforming streets and public spaces along its alignment.

The transformation of George Street, with its tree lined boulevard free of overhead wires together with the creation of traffic free pedestrian areas between Hunter and Bathurst Streets, provided the catalyst to create a world class retail, dining and active movement spine through the city.

Enhanced public spaces provide for traffic free interchange between light rail, heavy rail, and ferries at Circular Quay, efficient connections to events at Moore Park via Chalmers Street, and interchanges at the Kingsford and Randwick termini.

New community spaces were created throughout Surry Hills, with streets closed to traffic for the creation of local pocket parks that prioritise pedestrian amenity. Access to the UNSW and hospitals at Randwick is improved with stops on Anzac Parade and High Street.

The customer focused design of the stops – designed by Grimshaw Architects – and their seamless integration with the public domain provides a high quality, integrated and enjoyable transport experience and sensitively integrates
transport infrastructure within the fabric of the city.
