Elwood Foreshore
The redevelopment of Elwood foreshore was driven by the need to restore quality to a public open space by rethinking its form and function in structural terms.
The urban coastal promenade and beach of Elwood foreshore is part of the highly popular coastline destination of Melbourne's Port Phillip Bay and is 8km south of the city’s Central Business District. Like many urban foreshores, the quality of its public open space has declined over many years, in part due to inappropriate planning.

The primary, horizontal relationships between the foreshore public spaces and the beach and sea were dislocated. ASPECT Studio's redesign asserted the rightful dominance of the strong horizontal elements of the landscape – the seating wall and its lighting, other low concrete walls, the flat grass area, the “sunbathing” platforms and plaza edge, and low indigenous coastal vegetation. The only vertical elements in the landscape are the pole lighting, showers and canopy trees.
Car parking was too close to the primary attraction – the foreshore – and conflicted with pedestrian and cyclist movement through the site, affected views out to the water, and the main entrance road separated the car park from the foreshore. The redesign inverted these relationships and ensured all through traffic was kept as far as possible from the main public entrance.
