Celebrating the innovative use of bricks, blocks, pavers, and roof tiles, the 2023 Think Brick Awards were announced recently.

We were delighted that two of our projects received awards.
Allianz Stadium received the overall Bruce Mackenzie Landscape Award, while Melbourne Connect received a high commendation in the same category.

Allianz Stadium provides a seamless precinct embedded within its surrounding context. Physically and culturally opening the site up to the public and forming a connection between Paddington and Moore Park, the design creates a platform for activity throughout the year, supporting both events and day-to-day use.

The jury noted: “It’s hard to make a large area feel intimate and activated, yet the brick patterning brings the scale of this project down to a human level and helps to animate the stadium.  The patterns in the bricks and pavers create an ‘urban carpet’ that’s visually appealing from all directions.  This urban carpet serves to connect the neighbourhood and facilitate pleasant journeys.  There’s a real strength in the design idea and execution of the work that showcases the value of making long-lasting investments in public spaces.”

Melbourne Connect delivers an improved public realm, new laneways, and a central oculus courtyard, and is the nexus for several different organisations within the University of Melbourne precinct.

Brick is used extensively throughout the project creating cohesion and a link to the site’s past. Notably bricks from the former Royal Women’s Hospital are repurposed for paving and used to trace the outline of the demolished building.
