Design, Death & the Macabre: Echoes of the past through design

Erwin Taal, Senior Associate at ASPECT Studios, joined Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC) Radio National’s Natasha Mitchell and Sue Hodges, PhD of SHP (Sue Hodges Productions Pty Ltd) for a thought-provoking conversation on the role of design in shaping how we engage with places marked by death, tragedy, and the macabre.

Recorded at Old Melbourne Gaol during Open House Melbourne’s Design Week program, the session explored how design can honour the past while provoking reflection, navigating the complex ethical and emotional terrain of dark tourism sites, from ghost tours and true crime to memorials and reimagined public spaces.
