The new Sydney Fish Market has opened to the public, unlocking a vital new public realm for Sydney. Louise Pearson, Project Director, and Miguel Serrao, Project Lead, from ASPECT Studios joined architects 3XN and BVN to celebrate the opening.

Perched at the heart of Blackwattle Bay, the Fish Market waterfront unfolds as a welcoming edge, with water play and public art that celebrate culture old and new. Native planting and generous seating frame the harbour, while an amphitheatre transforms the public domain into a lively stage.

The site is dense with details that improve the experience of the visitor and reveal the site's context, including green pockets of vegetation and abundant places to sit, subtle references to the maritime use of the site, and flashes of safety-orange that offer a crisp nod to the site’s industrial past.

The first project to be delivered by Infrastructure NSW as part of the urban renewal of Blackwattle Bay, the 10.4-hectare site joins a string of the city’s iconic harbour sites, including Sydney Opera House, Royal Botanic Gardens, Circular Quay, Sydney Harbour Bridge, Barangaroo, and Darling Harbour, and expects to attract over six million visitors per year.
