Lei Zhang
AILA
Senior Associate
Lei’s professional and life experiences in Australia, China, the Middle East and the United States have enabled her to strike a balance of cultural sensitivity and openness in design. She is constantly seeking a narrative, place and identity of each unique site and ensuring this is brought into the design process at every opportunity.
Lei has over 15 years’ experience in landscape architecture and during this time has worked on a wide range of projects in terms of scale and nature, including landscape master planning, urban design, construction and place activation. These experiences have allowed Lei to understand and appreciate user focused design and site-specific responses on various scales.
Lei contributes to the profession through her institutional work. She is a member of the AILA ACT Executive Committee, actively promoting the profession and its role in society. She also regularly undertakes student critiquing and sessional teaching at Canberra University.
Contemporary art has inspired Lei on the connection between form and attributed meaning. Lei’s design work within Australian landscapes, with their distinctive, untamed and wild qualities, has enabled her to discover the enduring power and influence of a sense of place.
