Melbourne Park
Melbourne Park is Australia’s premier tennis facility and the home of the Australian Open. ASPECT Studios worked with NH Architects, the State Government, the City of Melbourne, the Olympic Park Trust and Tennis Australia for many years on the master planning and delivery of two large-scale redevelopments.
Initially NH and Aspect Studios were engaged with Populous to review and refine the 2010 Melbourne and Olympic Parks Master Plan to capture updated stakeholder requirements for the remaining stages of its implementation. This master plan aimed to elevate the Sports and Entertainment Precinct to a world-leading facility set within a parkland. This was fundamental to the profile of the Australian Open Grand Slam, and a key part of ensuring that the event remains in Melbourne well into the future.
The master plan also generated a number of key projects, of which NH Architects and ASPECT Studios subsequently delivered, including the Western Precinct Redevelopment including the Margaret Court Arena upgrade, and the Central Precinct Redevelopment that included "Centrepiece," Kia Arena and Garden Square facilities.

Western Precinct Redevelopment
ASPECT Studios with NH Architecture and Populous designed and documented the public realm of the Western Precinct Redevelopment, with a primary focus on the new Margaret Court Arena enclosure, connection to Rod Laver Arena and provision of major access from the tram stop and outdoor viewing amphitheatre over Garden Square.
Predominantly on an elevated podium level, this design integrated the masterplan vision with the requirement to create a flexible, stylised civic space suitable for the year-round use of patrons.

Central Precinct Redevelopment
ASPECT Studios with NH Architecture and Snøhetta designed and documented the third stage of the Melbourne Park Redevelopment. This encompassed the new Function and Media Centre, the Kia Arena Show Court/Arena and the completion of the elevated Central Plaza.
Incorporating seating berms on podium structure, occupiable landscaped transitions to the existing oval, upgraded amenity and landscaped areas under this tree canopy provide optimal flexibility to accommodate a range of annual high-profile events, yet still serve as a welcoming and useable public open space for all users. Feature landscaped berms atop the podium provide an iconic element within the Central Plaza, with tall canopy trees for shade, crafted seating edges and grassed platforms creating a destination and event space, whilst still allowing unimpeded circulation during peak event times.
The delivery of these projects has maintained the precinct’s premier sport and entertainment role internationally, and have set it up for many years to come.
