Pomegranate Place
This public plaza in Hefei was designed to provide locals with a dynamic antidote to the stresses of life in a high-density urban environment.
The overarching design of the space reflects elements of the local community and culture, with the flower of the city – the pomegranate – acting as a key reference point for the form, colour and composition of the park.

ASPECT Studios delineated three main programmatic zones – an urban pocket park, a children’s playground and a community park – that offer distinct experiences for the community within the constraints of the site.
The centerpiece of the urban pocket park is a illuminated sculpture inspired by the stamens of the pomegranate flower that creates both a landmark and identity for the surrounding urban context. Rhythmic paving represents the wind, and the shape of bespoke planters represent petals blowing in the breeze.

The children’s play space offers an exciting and stimulating play and learning experience. Mountain-shaped play mounds hewn from layered materials imitate the gradual changes and layers of the rock strata. Opportunities for children to come together and build essential social and physical skills are created in free and fixed play areas.
The open public park is complemented by a collection of more intimate spaces for smaller gatherings. A large open multi-functional lawn, a collection of pergolas and an impactful arrangement of feature seating emphasize the multi-functional nature of the project as a whole.
