UTAS Cradle Coast Campus Insight

There was a focus on rehabilitating the landscape, increasing penguin visitation, and improving the connection between the Campus, the coast and Burnie itself. Working together with Friends of Burnie Penguins, protected penguin habitats have been created, with the flora selection being based in improving their habitat and enhancing the remnant foreshore vegetation.

A new pedestrian network now connects the University Campus to the coast, surrounded by landscape berms that frame views from the striking new building and student areas to provide protection from coastal elements. Timber and steel edging was utilised to create seats and directional wayfinding, a nod to the site’s rail heritage.

We are thrilled to see this project come to fruition, which was a fascinating combination of conservation and landscape reinvigoration, and complements the Campus’ recently completed extensive green roof, a collaboration between ASPECT Studios and Fytogreen Australia Pty Ltd.
