Delving into Sydney’s maritime past

In addition to the lookout, new entry gates and signage to the nearby ‘Goat Paddock’ open space were designed. These plate steel and picket gates were designed to have a significant presence, in keeping with the maritime context.

The planting design consists of broad seeps of indigenous grasses, lillies and low shrubs. This planting selection was required to not impair views, to be semi wild in its character and be resilient to shallow, poor soil and salty winds.

ASPECT Studios designed the Woolwich Lookout for the Sydney Harbour Federation Trust (SHFT).The concept was to create a public place that interpreted and revealed the form of the Woolwich sandstone boat turning basin below, whilst creating a public platform for embracing distant harbour landscape views.

The design of the lookout evolved to include a cantilever over the cliff edge to emphasise the sublime lookout experience.

The materials palette for the lookout utilised standard materials and finishes used by the SHFT to suit the industrial maritime context. These include universal steel beam sections, heavy guage hardwood decking, mass concrete, micaceous iron oxide protective coatings and stainless steel fittings.
