CR Land MixC

This urban destination for CRLand combines retail, offices, residences and entertainment on a complex, multi-level site in Changchun. Located in the challenging climate of northeast China, ASPECT Studios looked to create an adaptive landscape that is useable during both bitterly cold winters and hot summers.

The external landscape is composed of a sweeping ground plane that transitions via a series of cascading stairs into a central sunken event plaza, as well as several roof gardens that sit atop the main retail building.

The main objective of the design was to create a woven tapestry of experiences, balancing commercial objectives with the needs of the local community. A gathering space and long social benches are sunken and offer shelter from harsh weather. The inclusion of an urban park – comprising functional community spaces and banks of greenery – allows locals to gather, linger and attend large-scale community events and exhibitions.
The complex site, which sits atop a train station and its various ventilation shafts, as well as staircases and other infrastructure, required precise coordination and a creative response to bring clarity to the final design.

The various layers of the project have been designed to relate to one another, achieved by the manipulation of the architectural from to create a series of cantilevered decks and balconies which overhang the sunken event space, creating visual interest and connection between multiple levels.

The project creates vibrant commercial outcomes, while also ensuring that the public are able to make full use of a new open space and retreat from the urban environment that is open 24 hours a day.
