Patyegarang Place - Marrickville Library
Patyegarang Place fosters connection and enhanced public life through its thoughtfully scaled spaces, generous softscapes and sensitive integration with the new Marrickville Library and the surrounding streetscape.
Despite its modest scale, the Place is a valuable community asset for Sydney’s Inner West, providing an open, welcoming space to meet and play. It also acts as a model for the successful delivery of a complex, multipurpose community projects, combining the library setting, a children’s courtyard, several outdoor learning spaces, a public park and plaza, and streetscape and public realm upgrades.

The landscape design works with the library to create a rich backdrop for communal experiences, enhancing the quality of life of locals and visitors in a quiet but substantial way.
ASPECT's design responds to the levels of the site, with three main terraces connected by ramps and stairs tailored to make level changes a point of interest and delight rather than an annoyance. By resisting the temptation to flatten the site, the design instead leads visitors on a journey through an intriguing public space.

Tucked within the library itself, the children’s courtyard is a thoughtfully detailed pocket set aside for play. A perimeter seating wall gives carers somewhere to rest, then transitions into a playful hopscotch wall which kids can balance and skip along.
