Tarrawarra Abbey
This multi-purpose building at Tarrawarra Abbey in the Yarra Ranges doubles as an innovative fire shelter.
ASPECT Studios developed a unique green roof for the project as a response to the potential threat posed by extreme weather. The roof is a fire-resistant lightweight green roof, containing an indigenous garden on a 200-millimetre substrate. A unique feature is that the roof can be saturated via a sub-soil irrigation system that employs site-captured water and a pump linked to a generator power supply. On hot days, the monks can retreat into the building and enjoy a degree of refuge.
