ASPECT Studios is excited to announce the appointment of Matthew Durning as Studio Director. Matthew’s appointment will expand the capabilities of our Brisbane studio, drawing on his wide range of experience in Queensland, across Australia and in New Zealand.

Matthew will be partnering with existing Studio Director Katherine English to grow our presence and capacity in Brisbane, bringing additional experience to the team at a crucial time of growth for the studio. Matthew’s skillset compliments Katherine’s and the existing team incredibly well, brining additional sector experience to the table, further increasing ability to secure and execute significant projects.

Among his recent award-winning Brisbane works are Oxley and Stirling, Eden Lane and the multi- award-winning Fish Lane Town Square. He also led the master planning of the West Village by Sekisui house and Mollison Park, which won a Landscape Architecture Award at the 2022 AILA Queensland Landscape Architecture Awards.

His expertise is wide-ranging, from city-shaping master planning projects to major public realm, residential, educational and sporting projects.

Matthew is guided by the belief that Australian cities become denser, designers can help the Australian public embrace the idea of shared spaces. Well-designed shared spaces will be crucial in providing quality outdoor environments that relieve the pressure on the current shortfall of urban green space within our cities.

Of Matthew’s appointment, Studio Director Katherine English said, “I’ve worked with Matthew for the best part of a decade, and it’s always a pleasure both professionally and personally. Our partnership will be familiar to many of our clients for the successful projects it has produced and the great designs we have created. I’m thrilled that we can now develop that partnership further.

“Matthew’s appointment underlines ASPECT’s commitment to our clients, the Queensland market and community, and our desire to grow in the region in a way that benefits the lives of people in our city and our state.”

Matthew Durning, Brisbane Studio Director of ASPECT Studios, had this to say of his new role: “I’m chuffed to be joining ASPECT Studios in Brisbane. I believe my approach to design will complement the team’s perspective beautifully. Having worked with Katherine before, I know we have a likeminded approach to design, and indeed the values and purpose which we work by.

“I’m looking forward to bringing my knowledge of the Australia’s eastern states to ASPECT at a time of growth for the practice.”
