As a practice, great design is at the heart of everything we do, so we are excited to see that Sub Base Platypus, a collaborative project between ASPECT Studios and lahznimmo architects, is an Good Design Australia Award Gold Winner for 2022!

These awards highlight the very best in design and innovation to a global audience and are one of the longest-running international design awards in the world.

Located in the north of Sydney Harbour, Sub Base Platypus has lived several different lives, including a gasworks, a torpedo factory, and a naval base. With a history defined by security concerns and a separation from public life, the site was spatially and physically divorced from the area it would have to serve. Now, the neighbourhood and the park are knitted together, allowing the historical elements to be seen on their own terms. The new parkland is playful and practical, but the nods to the site’s naval history act to draw the history of the site into sharper focus.

This builds on several awards that this project has received that acknowledge its outstanding level of design, including the National Australian Institute of Architects (AIA) Walter Burley Griffin Award for Urban Design, and the NSW AIA Lloyd Rees Award for Urban Design.

Congratulations to our colleagues and collaborators on this achievement.
