Gemdale One City Development
Located in historical Wuhan, the Gemdale One City Development is a mixed-use hub of culture, art, commercial precincts and community places that has been carefully designed to meet the needs of the local community, now and into the future.
The design brief called for a merger of contemporary Wuhan with the local mythology of the fenghuang, a mythical bird analogous to the Western phoenix. ASPECT's bold, narrative-driven design reflects the lifestyle and ambitions of a new generation of Wuhan citizens through a series of diverse spaces, nodes and experiences connected and unified by a fluid gesture and movement to replicate that of its mythological inspiration.

The project’s centerpiece is a sweeping fountain and water play space. Here, a reflective pool doubles as calming retreat and an ambient art feature. At night, it transforms into a vibrant interactive children’s dancing fountain for families and visitors. The fountain is surrounded by a sweeping line of gingko trees that provide a colorful, shady canopy throughout the year. A series of ‘’social edges’’ merge into the curves of the water’s edge, with sweeping walls sculpted from local stone deliberately positioned to guide a visitor’s movement and to encourage social exchange.

The design combines three contrasting tones of local granite paving, used in sweeping strokes to define the movement, functionality and spatial hierarchy of the design. Mimicking the image of the fenghuang in flight, the dynamic and fluid ground plane establishes a unified language that is spoken across the entire project.
Specialist lighting design integrates the precinct’s architecture and landscape, helping define each area to provide a unique and playful nighttime experience. Design choices like these ensure that the project is able to accomodate a user demographic that changes frequently - from corporate workers on weekdays, to entertainment and community interaction in the evenings and on weekends.
