An important benchmark for green suburban intensification, the Hope Street housing project balances increased density with thriving gardens, improved biodiversity, and community connection. We’re pleased that it has been recognised with a Landscape Architecture Award in the Gardens category at the WA Landscape Architecture Awards, presented by Australian Institute of Architects (AILA).
Working in collaboration with Officer Woods Architects and MDC Architects, ASPECT Studios reimagined medium-density living through a deep integration of landscape and architecture.

High quality medium-density projects like these will be vital in alleviating pressure on housing in our cities. As former Freemantle mayor Brad Pettit recently wrote, “Every time I ride by this medium-density housing around the corner from me in White Gum Valley I am filled with hope for our city.” “The design takes a “landscape first” approach, with generous setbacks for each dwelling to accommodate deep soil gardens and large trees. This has resulted in 60% open space across the site, contributing positively to the local urban tree canopy and improving biodiversity by prioritizing non-human habitats.”

Congratulations to the entire team who helped bring this vision to life.
